Sun, Sand & Simcoe: The Best Beaches in Simcoe County

by Scott Cooper

Whether you're looking for a spot to lounge in the sun, splash with the kids, or escape with a good book and the sound of waves, Simcoe County is home to some of Ontario’s most beautiful freshwater beaches. Nestled along Lake Simcoe, Georgian Bay, and smaller inland lakes, these beaches offer a slice of summer paradise—without the cottage traffic.

From popular family destinations to hidden local favourites, here’s your guide to the best beaches in Simcoe County.

1. Wasaga Beach

📍 Georgian Bay – Wasaga Beach
Best For: Long walks, people-watching, families

Stretching over 14 kilometres, Wasaga Beach holds the title of the longest freshwater beach in the world. Divided into several sections (Beach Areas 1–6). The entire commercial area at Beach 1 is currently being revitalized, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying the serenity of this world wonder on Georgian Bay this summer

Tip: Head to Beach Area 5 or 6 for a more relaxed, less commercial vibe.

 2. Centennial Beach – Barrie

📍 Kempenfelt Bay – Downtown Barrie
Best For: Convenience, families, waterfront festivals

Located right in the heart of downtown Barrie, Centennial Beach is a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike. With a wood boardwalk, concession stand, soft sand, shallow swimming, a great playground, and washroom facilities, it’s a top pick for families. This beach also has Lifeguards on duty most days and each summer a floating water park that is fun for the whole family. Added bonus: it’s steps from restaurants, patios, and the marina.

Tip: Best for sunrises as this beach faces east—the golden light over Kempenfelt Bay is stunning.

 3. Oro-Medonte (Oro Beach & Shanty Bay Beach)

📍 Lake Simcoe – Oro-Medonte Line 8 to Line 15
Best For: Peaceful swims, picnic spots, weekend unwinding

Scattered along the Oro-Medonte shoreline, several small public beaches offer a more laid-back alternative to the busier tourist hubs. Shanty Bay Beach, Oro Station, and Oro Beach Park all offer clear water, sand or grassy areas, and a calm, local vibe. Pack snacks and a book; these beaches are perfect “slow day” relaxation. Tip: Hop on your bike and ride the rail trail to access these peaceful local beaches

 4. Innisfil Beach Park

📍 Lake Simcoe – Innisfil
Best For: Families, active days, group outings

Just a short drive from Barrie, Innisfil Beach Park features multiple sandy coves, shaded areas, boat launches, and plenty of room to play. It’s ideal for groups, barbecues, and kids who need space to run.

Tip: It gets busy on weekends, so arrive early or plan a weekday visit.

 5. Tiny Township Beaches

📍 Georgian Bay – Tiny Township (e.g. Balm Beach, Bluewater Beach, Woodland Beach)
Best For: Quiet escapes, turquoise water, photography

Tiny Township is full of postcard-worthy beaches that rival the Caribbean on sunny days. Balm Beach has some commercial amenities, while spots like Bluewater Beach and Woodland Beach are more residential, offering serenity and spectacular views.

Tip: Parking can be limited, so check regulations before heading out.

 6. Johnson’s Beach – Barrie

📍 Kempenfelt Bay – East Barrie
Best For: A quick dip close to home

This small beach offers a convenient option just minutes from downtown Barrie. Tucked away at the end of a quiet street, Johnson’s Beach is ideal for locals looking to unwind after work or squeeze in a swim during a summer lunch break. Or drop a paddle board in and go for long paddle along the lush shores of Kempenfelt Bay

Tip: There’s limited parking, but it’s bike- and foot-friendly if you’re nearby.

 7. Penetanguishene Rotary Park Beach

📍 Georgian Bay – Penetanguishene
Best For: Family picnics, kayaking, day trips

This charming beach is part of a larger waterfront park with trails, playgrounds, and a boat launch. The water is shallow and great for kids, and the views of the bay are worth the drive.

Tip: Pair your beach time with a stop in downtown Penetanguishene or nearby Midland for ice cream or a bite to eat.

Whether you’re looking for a full day of sun and surf or a quiet hour by the water, Simcoe County’s beaches offer something for every mood. From lively Wasaga to hidden Oro gems, there’s no shortage of shoreline to explore.
